Between the Folds

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Back in 2007 I set out to make a cd case out of a folded standard sheet of paper.  The resulting case was used to house the weird little instrumental EP that I did called Music Computer Film.  Since then I’ve been making a lot of the Alchemist Records limited edition releases by folding paper so Origami is something that really interests me.  The PBS documentary Between The Folds takes Origami to the next plane and makes me think there could be many awesome music packaging ideas to come.

Vintage Future #1

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

The future, in the form of a new I and I full length, is still coming but now it seems like a Maxi Single will come first.  Details soon.  Until then here’s a vintage view of the future:

Black City

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

As a fan of Matthew Dear’s music I’m eager to see and hear his upcoming record “Black City”.  I say see because Ghostly International will be releasing an interesting concept version of the album that they’re calling a totem.  As someone involved in running a record label this  idea really intrigues me.  What are the artifacts that we will associate with music that will have the most enduring impact and connection in an era when song files float around so freely?  To  me an LP is still the ultimate musical artifact but I give props. to Ghostly for throwing down something new and innovative.

Illus Ocean

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

We’ve got a new artist in the Alchemist collective: Illus Ocean. His debut “Meskin in the Attic” truly stand outs amongst all the crap that we are bombarded with daily. He’s refreshingly unfamiliar with current music trends and his production is lo-fi in a unique way and for unique reasons. See for yourself. Here’s 2 tracks from the disc. It’ll be out next Tues. the 13th. Do not miss it.

Visual Complexity

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Graphic art that communicates complexity in a way that simplifies, is a continual source of inspiration for me both musically and artistically.  This site Visual Complexity showcases a lot of good work like this  “Random Walk” by Daniel A. Becker:
