Future Islands

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

I saw these guys Future Islands last night at the Opolis and it was really great! The interplay between the rather stoic almost Kraftwerkian bass and synth/laptop players with the incredibly theatrical and emotive vocalist was completely unique. I would start comparing said vocalist, Samuel Herring, to Wolfman Jack, Henry Rollins, Jack Black and Otis Redding but I don’t want to demystify what is essentially a totally unique performer. All in all there’s a very frank and genuine quality to their whole aesthetic that is refreshing. If they’re playing anywhere near you do not miss it!! It’s hard to capture the intensity of performers like these guys but this video hints at what it’s like:

Tall Sky Singers

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

I’m playing tomorrow night with a new project Tall Sky Singers (featuring my friend and colleague Kyle Combs). It’s totally different from the I and I stuff but it’s fun. It’s kind of Folky, Country, Alt. kind of stuff. At times reminiscent of The Jayhawks or Byrds and at other times it’s weirder.

These guys are making some really interesting and challenging work.  It’s unlike anything I’ve seen or heard before.  Sculpture.

I’ll be giving a short presentation/jam to the pupils of Middle Earth Child Development Center next Wednesday at 10:30. It should be fun.
