I saw these guys Future Islands last night at the Opolis and it was really great! The interplay between the rather stoic almost Kraftwerkian bass and synth/laptop players with the incredibly theatrical and emotive vocalist was completely unique. I would start comparing said vocalist, Samuel Herring, to Wolfman Jack, Henry Rollins, Jack Black and Otis Redding but I don’t want to demystify what is essentially a totally unique performer. All in all there’s a very frank and genuine quality to their whole aesthetic that is refreshing. If they’re playing anywhere near you do not miss it!! It’s hard to capture the intensity of performers like these guys but this video hints at what it’s like:
