Atlantic At Pacific Seasons ep

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Austin Wood of Atlantic At Pacific has a new free ep you should check out. It’s a shinier, brighter and more hi-fi sounding evolution of the A@P sound. It bears some resemblance to his Alchemist debut of last year but it’s definitely an evolutionary step.
There are lot’s of cats out there making similar kinds of tracks but what encouraged me to invite Austin to put out something with Alchemist was his very adept sense of what makes for a engaging composition. On this new ep he takes this to the next level by refining his sound/production into a more restrained and architecturally coherent form. Where “Weddings” was a virtual grab bag of styles held together by a common ambient fm synth heart, “Seasons” is much more focused on slow bumping minimal beats and grooves. Gone is the deep tape sound of Weddings but the chill definitely remains, despite the higher fidelity. There is also a more organic feel to these tracks especially the happy child- like bells, clocks and bass tones. In short this is a nice little ride that, given the generous lack of a price tag, is well worth the taking. Clocking in at a little more than 11 minutes, my only complaint is that there is not enough of it. As prolific as Austin is I’m sure he will remedy this soon.

Blackbird Blackbird – Xmasstime (feat. Atlantic At Pacific)

Friday, December 24th, 2010

Seems like everybody has a holiday song this year but leave it to some of this year’s most chill and talented dudes to come up with a nice little jam like this. Blackbird Blackbird has made some of my favorite tunes of the year and he happens to be pals with Alchemist artist Atlantic At Pacific. Their Beatles sampling collaboration is like a Marvel Team Up of beatsmiths!

Weddings Design Process

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Austin Wood’s debut as Atlantic at Pacific, “Weddings”, has a very distinct sound that in my mind takes the idea of encoding music with the feel of the beach to a new level. The album captures the feeling that being at the beach has of changing time perception and relaxing thought processes but it also taps into the dread, intensity and frightening power the ocean can produce. A hurricane or being trapped by a rising tide can turn a once tranquil place into a nightmare.
From the starting point of these thoughts I searched for something that would represent the full spectrum of sounds, emotions and concepts that the album seemed to suggest. Luckily I stumbled across the beautiful, powerful and grainy photography of holgabot and that became the centerpiece of the design. He has a lot of really nice photos but a few in particular seem to encompass a mood that fit the bill perfectly. The cover is based on his series of 5×4 polaroids called “Melancholy #4 Dusk”:

After experimenting with translucent material for the remix EP that I recently released, I was encouraged to see what working with transparency film would look like. The resulting prints looked beautiful the only trouble that I discovered was that I could find no adhesive that would bond this material to fold into a CD jacket. In the end we went with a transparent thread and sewed them by hand! Using transparency allowed me to play with layering the text from the front side and back and layering the squares from the front to back. It worked out pretty well but the transparent edition of this will most likely remain a super limited edition production.

Here’s the paper sleeve version and the transparent with the disc and inserts too:

The album’s available for pre-order now and will be out digitally world wide on Aug. 24th. via Alchemist Records.

Here’s the video that I edited for Atlantic at Pacific’s brilliant title track “Weddings”. The cinematography was graciously provided by Lutfu Tanrıover.

You are invited to Weddings

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

On August 24th Alchemist Records will be releasing Santa Cruz native Austin Wood’s Atlantic at Pacific debut album “Weddings”. I’ve been listening to the album as it’s progressed and now to the final version and it is a really awesome experience! It reminds me of the first few times I heard Boards of Canada’s “Music Has the Right to Children” and felt like there was an unexplored new world to discover. Repeated listenings reveal a depth of sound and vision that reward attention with electronic waves of texture, space and deep beats.  It captures the ocean and beach in all of it’s pleasantness, hypnotism and also it’s scary intensity.  I designed the album cover using a great image from Polaroid maestro holgabot.  Don’t miss this.  It’s an album to put on repeat.

Atlantic at Pacific

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

We’ve got a new member of the Alchemist Records collecitve: Atlantic at Pacific. Mainly the work of Austin Wood of Santa Cruz, CA, those familiar with the sounds of Washed Out and Toro y Moi will find some similarities but Atlantic at Pacific definitely has it’s own thing going on.  If J.Dilla and M83 made hazy sun soaked beach music together it might sound something like it.  They’ve got one spacey teaser track up on their myspace but the best is definitely yet come.  The debut EP Weddings will be out sometime this Summer, which given the tropical feel of the sound is quite fitting. More to come.
